With the Northern Education Program, Operation Beaver volunteers work in schools in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and the Yukon, assisting students through tutoring and training. Volunteers go to host communities in Canada and help organize such as activities for local youth at various recreational and/or educational centres. Volunteers and members of the host communities exchange and share cross-cultural information and experiences, to learn from each other.
The education work is not easy and many of the communities in which the volunteers work can offer unique and unexpected challenges. Apart from education work, however, the volunteers often take an active part in the community and 'extra curricular activities' such as Drum Dancing, soccer, cross-country skiing, curling, hunting, skidooing, and even making Mukluks!
Don Irving: "I am constantly amazed by the quality of people that volunteer for our programme and they are the reason that Frontiers Foundation has established such an excellent reputation throughout the north of Canada."
